Tattoo healing is a critical process that occurs after getting a tattoo. This process involves the skin repairing itself and properly embedding the tattoo ink. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure that your tattoo heals correctly and maintains its vibrant colours and sharp lines.
Do not touch your fresh tattoo with dirty, unwashed hands. Hands carry a lot of germs, and by touching the tattoo, you risk introducing bacteria into the area which can lead to infection. Allow at least 2 weeks to a month for the skin over your new tattoo to heal over.
Instructions after leaving
- Before you leave, I will wrap your tattoo with cling film and micropore tape. Keep it wrapped until you get home.
- Wash the tattoo with some warm water and antibacterial soap. (DO NOT SCRUB AT THE TATTOO)
- Pat the tattoo dry with a clean, dry towel or kitchen roll, or allow it to air dry. (DO NOT USE TOILET TISSUE)
- Apply a thin layer of moisturiser gently, avoiding products with added fragrance or alcohol as they aren't beneficial to the skin's natural healing process. Look for moisturisers made from natural ingredients. I recommend using After Inked, Palmers, or raw coconut oil.
- If the tattoo continues to bleed and ooze plasma on the first night, I recommend re-wrapping it with cling film and micropore tape. Clean the area and moisturise it before applying the cling film and repeat the cleaning process when you remove it in the morning.
- iIt's important to allow your tattoo to breathe as much as possible over the coming days. At the same time, keep it clean to avoid infection. Apply moisturizer 2-3 times daily to aid the healing process.
Normal skin reactions in the first few days to 2 weeks
- Leaking (blood, sweat, ink, plasma)
- Redness / swelling / bruising
- Itching (Tattoos can be itchy for up to a month, avoid picking and scratching scabs)
- Peeling
